Always use a licensed electrical contractor to perform any electrical work. Never attempt it yourself. Every Australian state has legislation that prohibits electrical work being carried out by unlicensed people. That means that it is actually illegal to do any electrical work yourself. There are also hefty fines attached to doing DIY electrical work.
Apart from the possibility of electrocution, DIY electrical work may void your home insurance.
A homeowner can do things such as changing a light bulb or resetting a safety switch but anything else should be done by a licensed electrician.
A licensed electrical contractor on completion of any work will issue a certificate of compliance stating that the work that has been performed complies with the current Australian Standards.
